Ministries of Mercy at Cornerstone We at Cornerstone want to be obedient to Jesus’ command given to us to go and be “Good Samaritans” to the people we come across in our lives. This means that:
1) Our ministries of mercy will be first and foremost one-on-one. Jesus did not say that a committee ministered to the needs of the wounded man on the Jericho Road, nor did the Good Samaritan call the local church for help from the Good Samaritan Society. He met the needs of the wounded man himself. Therefore, 2) There will be no committee structures organizing our ministries of mercy. What is done will be done through spontaneous acts of generosity and service in the name of Jesus by individual members. However, 3) None of our members have all the skill sets needed to meet all the needs they encounter. Therefore our ministers of mercy (every member is a minister of mercy) need some way of communicating to other members of needs that arise which they cannot fill. Which means that, 4) We need to set up a Skills Bank of talents and abilities various members have to offer to other members when a need arises. Examples of such skills are: minor plumbing, light carpentry, minor auto repair, financial counseling, mentoring, career counseling and job seeking skills. 5) Inside the Skills Bank will also be a list of people who are offering their time; time to read to someone, or take a boy or girl fishing, bowling, canoeing, baking, or to a ball game. This list will include people willing to provide transportation for medical appointments or for getting groceries. This section will also include people (especially young adults) who are willing to do yard work and snow removal. Here’s how the Skills Bank will work:
1) Members will fill out a survey to list the skills they have. 2) The list of people and skills will be updated periodically and be maintained in our office. 3) If a member is trying to assist someone in need and they find they could use additional help, they will first call the person(s) on the list whose skills are needed or they can call the office to ask for a member with those skills and if no member can be found a plea will go out via e-mail for help. 4) This way, no minister of mercy is left without resources, since they will have essentially the whole church to draw from and if the need is bigger than one church can handle, our pastors will solicit help from other churches in the community once the elders have approved the request. |
